Abstract

The article presents a linguistic and cultural analysis of the interpretations of the Tuvan concept ‘төрел’ (‘relative’). We see this concept as an integral unit of thought which describes kinship: what people are considered closely related, how they should be addressed and how to communicate with them in under various conditions and in different periods of life, etc. Our research is based on the data from dictionaries and from 10 works of fiction. Overall, 27 collocations containing the word төрел ‘relative’ have been discovered.

The analysis of the concept allows us to outline the details of Tuvan family life which form the core of their social and cultural existence. Generalization of lexical unit, which objectify this concept, has helped to distinguish several areas of its nominative field relevant to proximity and distance within the kinship - near, distant and remote. The distribution of selected expressions by areas is accompanied by a list of terms identified.

The whole nominative field of the concept includes separate words, loose collocations, authors’ phrases, idioms, proverbs, etc. It reveals the peculiarities of the Tuvan linguistic world picture, as well as the complexity of their multifaceted system of kinship.
