Abstract

The author considers the origin of names of the rivers Yenisei and Angara according to written sources of 13th – 17thcenturies taking into account the data about ethnic structure of the people living in the basins of these rivers and around lake Baikal, paying attention at the migrations of these peoples and sequence of their first contacts to the Russian Cossacks who were moving ahead on the East. The name Yenisei, according to the conclusions of the author, goes back to Nenets language and has been fixed in the lower reaches of this river. The materials allow the author to draw a conclusion that the name of the river Angara, contrary to popular beliefs, occurs not from Buryat, but from the Evenki language, and communication of this name with the modern river Angara appears considerably late, at the end of  the 17th century.
