Abstract

The article examines correspondences between Turkic and Slavic proverbs based on structural-semantic modeling of interlingual proverbial parallels, utilizing Chuvash and Belarusian languages as the material. The research draws upon 2,500 Chuvash proverbs from the collection “Vattisen samakhësem, kalarashsem, sutmalli yumakhsem” by N. R. Romanov (2012) and over 12,000 Belarusian proverbs from the collection “Prykazki i prymaŭki” by M. Ya. Hrynblat (1976).

It has been established that both Chuvash and Belarusian proverbial repertoires contain analogous units, differentiating into universal, international, as well as those common to Chuvash, Belarusian, and Russian languages. Some Chuvash and Belarusian proverbs exhibit identical structural models, varying in the degree of disparities in lexical-semantic organization and/or syntactic form. The majority of Chuvash proverbs correlating with Belarusian proverbs to some extent are characterized by ethno-linguistic and cultural distinctiveness. The unexpectedly high number of direct correspondences in the structure and semantics of Chuvash and Belarusian proverbs indicates a typological similarity in the proverbial repertoires of these languages. Simultaneously, the ethnocultural markedness of Chuvash analogs and correlates of Belarusian proverbs suggests a close interconnection between typologically common and ethnoculturally specific elements in the proverbial repertoire of the Chuvash language.
