Social portrait Buddhist pilgrim of Buryatia: from traditional to online format (based on the results of a sociological study)

The article presents the results of a sociological study of the modern portrait of a Buddhist “online pilgrim” in Buryatia. In January 2021, we interviewed 28 pilgrims who participated in Buddhist rituals and study sessions online. The respondents were selected through a three-stage process and had to match the following criteria: Buryatia as the place of residence; participation in real-life pilgrimages to places of worship; taking part in a virtual religious event in 2020 or 2021.
As of now, an online Buddhist pilgrim in Buryatia is, in most cases, a woman aged 40 to 60 who has a higher education degree, and a non-manufacturing job. The contemporary online pilgrim is a Buddhist by tradition, following Buddhism since childhood. She mostly gets involved in a traditional pilgrimage, but, nevertheless, chooses to participate in a virtual religious events - e.g., an online pilgrimage to the Teachers.
Despite having an average or below average income, representatives of this social cross-section of Buryatia Buddhists made the average two or three pilgrimage trips (57.1% of respondents went on four or more), and plan to take at least another four.
The composition of the respondents is predominantly female (92.9%). While those aged 40 to 60 years remained the most active participants, those aged 55 to 60 had a formidable presence, Members of the latter group keep planning new trips. The most important destinations tha
