Mathematical education in the development of the educational system in the Republic of Tuva

Abstract

The article presents a historical overview of mathematical education in Tuvan schools, shows the conditions of developing an educational environment for teaching mathematics, and finally, highlights and analyses its historical periods. For our sources, we rely on academic works on the history of education in Tuva, as well as on regulations in the field of education in the recent years.

During the pre-1944 period, the basics of mathematics were taught in the traditional Tuvan family. Mathematical skills were relevant for the traditional measures of volume, length, and time, and were associated with Tuvan traditional lifestyle. With the beginning of school construction in the period of the Tuvan People's Republic (1921–1944), the study of elementary arithmetic began; and with the creation of the Tuvan script, basic mathematical skills in the Tuvan language were made part of the educational process.

The Soviet period of national education (1944–1990) was that of transformations and development in the educational system, based on the principles of general education. The introduction of curricula and Soviet educational books started along with a massive school construction. The first Tuvan mathematicians were also instructors who had been training school teachers for the republic at Teacher Training Institute since 1952. A significant layer in the teaching method of that time included work on translating mathematical terms and textbooks into Tuvan language.

The period of educational reforms, also focusing on national priorities, has started in the 1990s and is still ongoing.

The content of mathematical educational has changed significantly with the shift in the education environment driven by the state educational policy and socio-economic situation in Russia and the region. The studies of certain aspects of how mathematical education is to develop in Tuva have set the agenda of three schools of research: mathematical theory, applied mathematics and teaching of mathematics at school and university.
