The development of environmental studies in Tuva

The article takes stock of the history of environmental studies in Tuva, which started from the work of the comprehensive biosphere expedition “The Ubsu-Nur Experiment” (1984). The expedition, led by V.V. Bugrovsky, aimed to create methods and techniques for overall assessment of how both natural and anthropogenic factors of the environment were changing. These factors, which have a strong impact on natural ecosystems, were to be studied by combining satellite, sub-satellite and ground level data. The first expedition team featured scientists from several research centers who worked in south Tuva and northern Mongolia.
The same years saw the rise of the only academic institute of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences to be ever located in Tuva – the Tuvinian Institute for Exploration of the Natural Resources. Prior to October 1995, it existed as the Tuvan Department of the Siberian branch, Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The institute had two research priorities: analyzing and developing natural resources of Tuva and neighboring regions of Central Asia, and geoecology of natural habitats and society. At the moment, environmental studies are conducted at the Laboratory of biodiversity and geoecology.
Tuvan State University also made an invaluable contribution to the field by providing environmental education and ethnoecological knowledge to the younger generations.
The article also focuses on the most prominent environmental scholars, topics of dissertation defended, titles of books and articles published.
