Environmental situation in contemporary Kalmykia: an interdisciplinary study

The article takes stock of the most urgent environmental issues in the Republic of Kalmykia, such as soil degradation, desertification, droughts and drywinds. They both aggravate the environment in the republic (Russia’s most arid region) and take toll on the life of the regional community. Our study is based on systematized studies, official reports and documentation from regional authorities, as well as on expert interviews the author held in 2021.
The article proves that the ignoring the rules of reasonable use of natural resources leads to their depletion and to catastrophic deterioration of pasture lands. Kalmykia’s agrobusiness is largely dependent on climatic factors, with a year of good harvest is followed by two or three years of failure. 2020 was the year of hardest draughts ever, which has caused great losses in agrobusiness.
The state of soils in the arid zones, the absense of reliable water resources and the increased number of dust storms and drywinds — all of these factors aggravate the aridization of the region and are of gravest concern for the regional community.
