The article analyzes the multifaceted creative work of the Tuvan literary scholar and critic M. A. Khadakhane (1933–2021). The application of the cultural-historical approach, sociocultural method, and historical-functional analysis made it possible to encompass various aspects of her activity and to evaluate her contribution to the development of Tuvan literature and literary criticism, including its relevance to other national literatures of the post-Soviet space.
It is shown that Khadakhane’s literary-critical works are distinguished by depth, persuasiveness, and precision. She carefully examines all elements of the prose writer’s craft, including the ability to depict characters convincingly, to construct logically organized plots that contribute to the profound revelation of personalities, and to develop an individual recognizable style. The critic also analyzed elements of poetic mastery: the ability to create a lyrical persona and to build the structure of a poem through varied artistic means. Khadakhane interpreted poetic craftsmanship as originality and expressiveness of style as well as creative mastery of poetic techniques. In discussing artistic skill, she emphasized the aesthetic value of ethno-oriented artistic devices that authentically reflect the traditional foundations of a people’s life.
M. A. Khadakhane approached the analysis of writers’ and poets’ works objectively, always noting shortcomings alongside creative achievements and discoveries, thereby encouraging the development of their literary craftsmanship. A valuable feature of her critical works is the ability to perceive the creative evolution of authors over time.
Khadakhane’s writings on literary technique retain both theoretical and practical significance for contemporary literary studies and criticism, as well as for the study of the literatures of Turkic peoples.
